Protect yourself and your car with brake service
That squeaking and grinding sound you hear when you use the brake pedal isn’t just annoying – it’s your car trying to tell you something. If your brakes aren’t working properly, then you’re not in control. It’s crucial that you protect not only yourself, but the other drivers on the road, by maintaining your brakes.
Let the certified mechanics at GORDHAN GARAGE check at your brake system. We’ll let you know if you’ve got a minor or a major repair. Also note we do brake inspections part of your regular maintenance checkups.
Brakes are pretty much the most important safety device on your car. If you’ve ever partially lost your brakes in the past, you’ll agree that it’s not something you want to experience again. Inspecting your brakes twice a year for wear and tear can protect you and your passengers. Additionally, it will also help save you money by catching any damage before it becomes too costly.
The master cylinder, the heart of the vehicle’s braking system, holds the brake fluid when it is not being delivered to the brakes through the brake lines. If brake fluid leaks because the master cylinder is worn or brake lines are plugged or broken, the fluid cannot be delivered, hence the brake pads will become ruined.
The brake fluid itself can become dirty or contaminated as it draws rust-causing moisture and picks up other debris, or it can break down from excess heat. Clean brake fluid is either clear or slightly yellow, while dirty brake fluid may be brown or even black. Old and dirty brake fluid can damage ABS brake systems internally.
The brake lines connect to the master cylinder through a combination valve, which combines a metering and proportioning valve. It regulates the pressure on the front and rear wheels to make sure both sets of brakes are applied simultaneously. A malfunctioning combination valve may cause the wheels to lock up.
Brake pads and shoes can be made of ceramic, metal or organic materials, while the disc rotors and drums they press against are made of metal. Because the pads and shoes create friction to stop the car, they gradually wear down over time and may wear away completely, letting the metal of the calipers and cylinders they are attached to grind against the rotors and drums and damage them. Some pads have a metal strip attached that sounds a warning whistle when the pad becomes too worn, but this strip sounds only when the car is in motion and the brakes are not applied.
How do I know if my brakes need checking?
- If you hear a grinding noise when applying the brakes.
- If your brake pedal vibrates underneath your foot.
- If your car pulls to the left or right when braking.
- If you brake pedal feels “spongy”.
- If your brake warning light is on.
Why should I check my brakes?
- Brake fluid should be changed approx every 2 years.
- Take advantage of our brilliant “brake fluid replacement
- You should check your brakes at least twice per year.
- It’s obviously very dangerous if your brakes are not working properly.
What will our technicians do when testing the brakes?
Our experienced technicians will initially measure your brake pads using a brake pad gauge. They will also analyse the brake discs using a micrometer, which measures the thickness of the disc. These measurements will be compared to the technical specifications for your car and we will advise you if any replacement is required.
We can repair and replace most car brakes including discs, pads, calipers, hand brake cables and drums.
ANTI-LOCK BRAKES (ABS)
Anti-lock brakes are a standard feature on modern cars, working to avoid the wheels locking up and the car skidding under heavy braking. If an ABS warning lamp pops up on the dashboard don’t delay getting it checked out because you never know when an emergency stop may be required and the anti-lock system may save your (or someone else’s ) life.
BRAKE HOSES AND MASTER CYLINDER
The hydraulic fluid which operates the brakes flows through metal and rubber pipes which are exposed to the elements and can fail. Our regular servicing ensures that we check and advise you well before these may cause problems.
BRAKE PADS
Over time, the brake friction pad wears down with use, and requires replacement. Most vehicles have sensors in the pad which pop up an alert on the dashboard when the pads wear thin and need replacing. However, they are not fullproof and when you hear grinding noises during braking that means a pad has worn completely and the metal backing is scraping the disc and wearing it out!
BRAKE DISCS
Your brake discs are gripped by the brake pads to slow the vehicle down. The discs are slowly worn thinner until they reach a minimum safe thickness when we will advise their replacement. Frequently low mileage vehicles suffer rusting of the discs which causes uneven braking and wears the discs out faster!
Any juddering when braking must be investigated promptly so stay alert to how the car feels under braking and if a change is felt get the brakes checked soon.
To ensure your braking system is working as efficiently as possible, contact GORDHAN GARAGE to book a brake service and make sure that your vehicle is able to stop when you really need it too.
